Elmfield Gymnastics Club
City of Doncaster
Club History
The club was founded in 1976 by Mr Pete Sampey, at Elmfield House in Doncaster town centre – hence the name Elmfield. Over the years it has passed through several Head Coaches, to the present Head Coach Jodie Wadsworth who took over the club in 2005.
In 2005 the club was running at a community centre twice a week, where we had to set up and put away the equipment every lesson! In 2010 the club took a massive step forward and moved to its current location in Rossington, with its own permanent venue. In 2014 we expanded the venue by taking on another 2 units, increasing the space and also allowing us to dig a foam pit. This enhancement not only improves the safety of the gymnasts but also facilitates the development of their skills to a higher level.
The club operates as a Not-for-Profit organization, meaning any funds received are reinvested into the club. These funds are used for upgrading equipment, improving qualifications of coaches, and general running of the club. Presently, the club caters to approximately 250 children. The aim of the club is to provide good quality, safe, fun gymnastics and trampolining classes in a friendly, family environment. Class sizes are kept small to ensure that each gymnast can reach their full potential.
We provide lessons for children from 18 months onwards, and encourage members to continue their gymnastics and stay with the club through coaching, judging and volunteering. We also like to provide opportunities and new experiences the children/gymnasts can take part in.
Each year the gymnasts take part in:
-
an annual display to showcase their skills.
-
a club competition where the gymnasts get to experience taking part in a gymnastics competition.
-
All gymnasts work through the Elmfield Gymnastics award scheme, certificates are handed out free of charge during the lesson as they pass their certificate.
-
We also take part in competitions around the country, in display events, women’s artistic, men’s artistic, trampolining, tumbling, general gymnastics, disability gymnastics. The club has had many successes at these competitions, competing and medalling at British Championships.
